Mansfield live music venue, the Town Mill is to stage a fund raising gig to help the local homelessness shelter at the Nottingham Road Methodist Church in Mansfield. The music event, called Gimme Shelter, will take place at the Bridge Street venue on Saturday 17th of January from 7.30pm.
The public are being urged to turn out in numbers for the gig, getting a nights entertainment for a minimum door donation of just three pounds. The night will feature five local bands, The Bayoos, The Rusty Trombones, Scarletts Wake, Sonacide and Pam. All the bands are giving up their time for nothing and the venue isn’t taking anything from the door take for production costs, every penny that comes in will go straight to the shelter.
The Temporary Winter Shelter is managed by local homelessness charity Framework and provides fifteen beds for homeless people through the coldest winter months. The shelter relies on public donations to pay for food, clothes and warm bedding for people using the shelter.
Venue manager Kev Boot said “It really brings home the plight of the homeless at times like this. We all take for granted our centrally heated homes. Many of these people would be sleeping in underpasses or virtually anywhere where they can gain shelter from rain with nothing significant to insulate them from the bitter cold were it not for shelters like this”.
The event is ticketless, just pay on the door anything upwards of three pounds. More information can be found at the venues websites www.townmill.com or www.myspace.com/townmill

Framework's annual sleepout event is an opportunity for people to raise money for local homeless and vulnerable people, by being sponsored to sleep rough for one night.
This time the 'sleepout' takes place on Friday the 13th. Considered to be an unlucky day, we ask people to sleep under the stars for one night and reflect upon those who are unfortunate to have to sleep rough for more than one night, or live with the threat of homelessness looming over them.

Homelessness will be the focus for a special service at Southwell Minster on Saturday 30st January at 11.00am.
The service, at which all are welcome, will be attended by church groups from across Nottinghamshire. It has been organised by the Minster in conjunction with local homeless charity Framework and follows a successful event for the last two years.
Those attending will hear from staff and service users about some of Framework’s activities throughout Nottinghamshire.
The service of witness and thanksgiving takes place at the start of Poverty and Homelessness Action Week (30 January – 7 February) – a national event organised by Church Action on Poverty, Housing Justice and Scottish Churches Housing Action to encourage churches to raise the profile and improve understanding of homelessness.
Framework Chief Executive Andrew Redfern said: “We hope that the many church groups and individuals concerned about homelessness and poverty will attend to pray for the work of Framework and other charities supporting people who are marginalised.”
The service, lasting up to an hour, will be followed by refreshments.

Hardy volunteers in Mansfield will brave the bitter cold next Friday when they spend a chilly night sleeping out under the stars at The Big Snore to raise funds for Nottinghamshire homeless charity Framework.
Now in its sixth year, The Big Snore, hosted at St Mark’s Church in Mansfield on Friday 29 January 2010, gives local people the chance to experience what it is like to ‘sleep rough’, whilst raising money for Framework services for homeless people in Mansfield.
Last year, 35 Big Snore participants gave up their snug duvets and central heating for a night in the grounds of St Mark’s Church, raising an impressive £7,000 in sponsorship for local homeless and vulnerable people.
Pam Bishop, organiser of The Big Snore says: “The Big Snore began with 2 people sleeping out on the front step of the Church, so it has been heartening for us to see how local support for the event has grown over the last 6 years.
“We have great fun at the event as well as having time to reflect and learn more about the issues around homelessness. We all feel a real sense of achievement in the morning after ‘surviving’ the night and we would love it if more people would like to join us and take part in The Big Snore this year.”
“St Mark’s Church is situated close to Framework’s Sherwood Street Day Centre for homeless people and the organisation’s Winter Night Shelter at Bath Street Methodist Church. Every day, we see local people who do not have a roof over their head using Framework’s services and it is important to us that we do what we can to help Framework make life just that little bit easier for the local people who need support”.
Chris Senior, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Framework, explains why events like The Big Snore are so important to help support Framework’s work with homeless and vulnerable people:
“Money raised by the The Big Snore will be used to fund activities and items for homeless and vulnerable people that cannot be funded any other way - things that many of us might take for granted.
“It could be used to pay travel costs so that a homeless person can visit their family, or for surprising someone with a birthday cake. Alternatively, it may go towards buying someone smart clothes for an all-important job interview. These are all things that help build people’s self-confidence and support them on their journey to independent living.
“The Big Snore has grown year upon year and the commitment shown by the event organisers and participants is truly astounding. We are hugely grateful for the support they show us which enables us to really make a difference to people’s lives.”
