A free handy person service called Fix-it is available for Nottingham city residents who need support with minor DIY and home maintenance.
The Fix It service can help you with painting and decorating, putting up shelves and curtain rails, replacing bulbs, fitting doors and locks, laying flooring and more. All you have to do is supply the materials.
Mr Jones called Fix It to help his daughter, who has learning difficulties, he said: "My daughter needed help to redecorate her hallway, I'd seen a poster for Fix it so I gave them a call. Two chaps came around to look at the job. They advised us what materials we needed to get, explained everything they were doing and did the entire hall in 3 days. They did an excellent job, and my daughter was very pleased."
Fix It is provided by local charity Framework in partnership with Age Concern. It is funded by Nottingham City Council as part of their Nottingham Jobs Plan aimed at helping people back into work.
As well as providing a free hand to those who need practical help at home, it also offers volunteers an opportunity to work alongside qualified Handy Persons' to gain on-the-job training and work experience.
Wendy has just started volunteering for Fix It, she said: "I'm out of work at the moment, so I wanted to keep myself occupied. I'm interested in becoming a support worker, so this was a good opportunity for me to work with people with differing support needs. I'm a landscape designer originally and have really enjoyed sharing my knowledge and skills with people. "
To make use of the free service you must live in Nottingham city and be responsible for the job you want help with. The service is available to anyone, however priority will be given to people on benefits or with a low household income (£16,000 year or below).
