“Volunteering Changed my life” – Michelle’s Storymichelle

In June 2008 Michelle received an invitation from a Framework employee to come along and help out at Framework's Handel Street service, an advice and day centre for people with alcohol and drug problems. As Michelle had always had an interest in social care, she jumped at the chance of starting as a volunteer.

"I had not been working for a number of years.  When I worked before it was in bars and warehouses as I was not sure what I wanted to do.  I had been in a violent relationship for ten years and was now a single Mum with four daughters including one with ADHD.  This opportunity came along which I thought would help me move forward in my life."

Michelle volunteered for six months and then was successful in gaining employment at the Handel Street service for a few months.

"Volunteering made me feel good.  It increased my confidence and made me realise that I can do something to help other people.  The experience I got from the volunteering and the life skills gained from my past helped me to gain employment and also have a better understanding of the homeless sector."

When Michelle's employment finished at Handel Street in March 2009 she moved on to work at Elizabeth House in Daybrook as a full time Supported Housing Worker where she works with residents, supporting them to recognise and achieve their potential and develop the skills necessary to live independently.  Elizabeth House provides accommodation and support for single homeless people from Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe.

"I could not pick what I enjoy most about my job as I love all of it!  I like the variety and the people I work with.  I feel happy and settled here at Elizabeth House.  My family was a bit sceptical at first with my job due to lack of knowledge but I have made them understand and they now fully support me."

Michelle is always encouraging people to volunteer as she tells them it is great for that first foot in the door and for learning new skills to help with gaining employment.

"I am really glad I went along to volunteer.  If I didn't I would still be at home wondering what to do with my life.  Through volunteering at Framework I have found my niche and changed my life!"
